U.S. consumers are bombarded by TV and radio commercials. Watching commercial TV or listening to commercial radio is a choice, of course. Sitting in L.A. traffic and looking out on motley landscapes of billboards is less a choice. People often equate all caps in emails as ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????yelling.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? Billboards that dwarf the size of one?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s commuter vehicle is more akin to being screamed at. Just what the commuter needs: a little more tension. There, there. Take a few deep breaths.
On Nov. 13, the Los Angeles planning commission proposed a six-month billboard moratorium. The proposal next goes to the city council.
The billboard industry has aggressively fought previous city restrictions. L.A. currently is dealing with 20 lawsuits filed by outdoor advertising companies. The proposed moratorium would not apply to billboards that have building permits!, nor multistory vinyl signs, aka ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????supergraphics.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????
In June 2008, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking L.A. from banning as many as 34 supergraphics from several outdoor advertising groups.
