Kansas Pesticide Company Violations

At one warehouse of a Kansas pesticide company, EPA inspectors said they found 426 drums and 24,000 containers of waste, while the company's main production plant contained 53 drums and 330 containers of waste, most of which were leaking and not labeled.

Federal regulators in August found potential new violations at a St. Joseph, Kansas pesticide company that was already under orders to clean up chemical spills and stop handling hazardous materials.

The Environmental Protection Agency earlier this year filed administrative orders forcing HPI Products to identify all chemicals being stored at its main warehouse near downtown St. Joseph and a second facility, and to dispose of all waste acids, sludge, canceled pesticides and unusable chemicals.

The EPA said it had found additional problems at two more company-owned facilities in St. Joseph.

The agency said it found more than 1,000 pounds of hazardous waste, some of which was corrosive or flammable. In addition, inspectors found large spills at the production plant of chemicals the company couldn’t identify.

EPA spokesman Dale Armstrong said the company was given 14 days to identify all the chemicals at the locations, “so we know what kind of hazards we’re dealing with.”
