John Brailsford Jr. Is Horticultural Research Institute’s New President

John Brailsford Jr. is a green industry leader and president of the Shady Grove Plantation and Nursery in Orangeburg, S.C. His wife, Janet, is a member of the nursery team.

The Horticultural Research Institute (HRI) was established in 1962 as the research arm of the American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA).

John Brailsford Jr. of Orangeburg, S.C., who took office as the new president of HRI in late January, notes the institute is “repositioning itself as driving, not just funding, the research agenda of the green industry.”

Mr. Brailsford has been an HRI member since 1997 and currently is a member of the HRI Board of Trustees and Executive Committee. He has been an ANLA member since 1948 and held ANLA office as lieutenant governor and governor, representing South Carolina (1997-2003). He served as president of the South Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association (SCNLA) in 1996 and was a member of its board of directors.

Mr. Brailsford is president of Shady Grove Plantation and Nursery in Orangeburg, S.C., a business founded by John Brailsford Sr. in 1939.

Mr. Brailsford was the recipient of the “South Carolina Nursery Professional of the Year” award in 2001. In 2006, he become a Fellow of the SCNLA and in 2007 was named “Outstanding Contribution to the Nursery & Landscape Industry” by SCNLA.

Mr. Brailsford is a graduate of The Citadel and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He was on active duty from 1970 until 1975, achieving the rank of captain. After the Army he pursed a masters in business administration at the University of South Carolina on the GI Bill.
