The Fair Oaks Recreation and Park District created Jim Streng Park, a new, 0.6-acre park that commemorates Jim Streng, one of the Streng Brothers who built over 3,000 modernist homes in the Sacramento area and served as a Sacramento County Supervisor for many years. The playground is on extra land that resulted from a major road improvement project. The park was designed by Verde Designs with the help of students from Meraki High School, a local alternative high school in Fair Oaks, who did the community engagement for the early design of the park. The students did surveys, interviews, and workshops with the residents and stakeholders to find out what they wanted and needed for the park, which Verde Designs used to make the park plan. The park has a children's play area with synthetic turf surfacing where the kids can move around without touching the ground, and a natural play area with boulders and logs, where kids can use their imagination to climb and jump between the natural elements of the park. This allows kids of all ages to be creative in their play. The park uses native plants, no-mow grass, low maintenance landscaping, and custom benches. Other improvements include an automated irrigation system with a solar-powered controller and site furnishings such as drinking fountains, custom lounge furniture, ornamental fencing, and an accessible ramp from the street to the playground. The park is a nice addition to the neighborhood, which is undergoing a change in population with young families moving into homes that have been occupied by longtime residents.
