Dennis Farney, a Kansas University alumnus and retired Wall Street Journal journalist, has donated an 8-year old tulip poplar to the campus to help efforts to replace damaged trees from a mid-March storm. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s not any ol?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? poplar, but one Farney grew from the seeds of the tulip poplar Thomas Jefferson planted just west of his Monticello home in 1807. K.U. Landscape Architect Greg Wade assisted Farney in planted the tree on campus.
Jefferson has been called the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?father of American forestry.” He had 160 species of trees planted at Monticello, including two tulip poplars (Liriodendron tulipifera) adjacent to the house, one of which has survived and stands 120 feet tall. While minister to France, Jefferson distributed seeds of North American trees to his European friends. Today, the Monticello estate distributes the seeds of Jefferson?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s venerable tulip poplar for $25 (Monticello.org)
