The main financial resource Jacksonville?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s mayor and City Council have used over the years to plant trees and improve landscaping on public roads is nearly depleted.
There is about $2 million left in the city?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s tree protection trust fund, an account fed by developers?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,?? contributions that had a balance of more than $10 million just a year ago.
The sagging economy ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????+ which dried up new housing starts and stopped money from coming in ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????+ is to blame, and there are no accusations of improper spending or mismanagement. But the fact remains that a line of money that once seemed never-ending is expected to end, and soon.
The council?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Finance Committee, led by Stephen Joost, has stopped new spending out of the tree protection fund until a decision can be made on how the remaining dollars should be used.
