Irrigation Association Meets with Congress During Fly-In Event

Irrigation Advocates Take Action
by Staff

Irrigation Association advocates promote efficient irrigation policy and industry vitality through policy and relationships.

Irrigation professionals from 10 states participated in the 2023 Irrigation Association Fly-In to promote efficient irrigation practices and advance the industry's economic vitality through effective policy and relationships with decision-makers. The Irrigation Association advocates for the adoption of efficient irrigation practices and for changes in policies that would benefit the industry. Nathan Bowen, the Irrigation Association advocacy director, emphasizes the importance of advocating for the industry on Capitol Hill, especially with uncertainties in the financial sector and potentially harmful changes to critical labor programs on the table.

During the Fly-In, attendees met with more than 20 policymakers, including Rep. Glenn "GT" Thompson, chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, to discuss issues such as immigration, labor, and tax challenges facing the industry. The Irrigation Association has published its priorities, including the need to invest in and improve conservation programs, recognize the multiple benefits of irrigation efficiency, provide producers with the technical assistance they need to become more efficient, and expand rural connectivity and agriculture's cybersecurity needs.

As Bowen says, "it is critical that we demonstrate the impact and value of our industry with decision-makers on Capitol Hill." For Landscape Architects, this advocacy effort could lead to important changes in policies and programs that would better support the industry and enable irrigation professionals to continue doing their vital work for our communities and nation.
