In a letter addressed to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Irrigation Association (IA) recommended development of a voluntary standard for WaterSense spray sprinkler specs. The IA submitted comments in response to the EPA's WaterSense program's Notice of Intent to Develop a Draft Specification for Spray Sprinkler Nozzles. IA CEO Natasha Rankin affirmed the organization's support for the WaterSense program but suggested that additional work is needed to build consensus on the scope of the specification.

 
"The WaterSense label is an important tool that helps consumers make informed choices that conserve water," says Nathan Bowen, IA advocacy director. "We are committed to working with EPA and WaterSense to ensure workable specifications for the industry, communities, utilities and ultimately consumers."

IA recommended the development of a "voluntary, consensus-based American National Standards Institute standard that defines spray nozzles efficiency" as a basis for the WaterSense specification, which would help resolve issues raised by individual IA members.

Rankin emphasized IA's commitment to bringing the standard development process to a successful conclusion, which could involve partnering with the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. IA's comments also highlighted the importance of addressing how the spray sprinkler nozzle specification interfaces with other WaterSense specifications for irrigation controllers and spray sprinkler bodies.
