Iowa ASLA News by Nancy A. Surprenant, ASLA DES MOINES, IA For the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (IASLA), 1998 was an exciting kick-off to the ASLA's 100th Anniversary Celebration. No longer content to stay within the state's boundaries, IASLA went national-- literally! What began with the election of Iowa's native son Tom Dunbar, FASLA, as the 1997-98 National ASLA President, soon triggered an explosion of momentum. The 1998 IASLA Spring Conference, "Urban Growth-- Defining the Edge," not only reiterated the IASLA's commitment to quality continuing education programs and seminars, but also served as the backdrop to the mid-year ASLA Trustee and Chapter Presidents' meetings. Over fifty ASLA leaders and chapter representatives from throughout the country joined the IASLA in Des Moines, IA, to address the issues of urban growth and urban sprawl. Nationally known speakers-- including Frank Martin, Patricia Faux, Robert Liberty, Pamela Neary, and Chris Lannert-- generated discussions applicable to the urban growth dilemmas being encountered by cities across the country. The Spring Conference also serves as the venue in which we bestow our Chapter awards for leadership in the community and in our profession. This year's recipients were: Bill Leonard, editorial writer, The Des Moines Register, for his environmental effort shown through his articles relating to the Loess Hills; Trees Forever, for their work in service to the community; and Julia Badenhope, for her long-standing service to the profession and IASLA.
