Spreading in lawns and road ditches, yellow toadflax may tolerate repeated mowing. Producers are encouraged to control this weed by digging the roots of the weed out of the ground, or apply herbicide to prevent spreading and growth.

Thousands of acres are already infested, and the spread of yellow toadflax in eastern South Dakota may call for control measures.

The invasive weed, often called ?EUR??,,????'??butter-and-eggs,?EUR??,,????'?? is widespread in northeastern South Dakota, and South Dakota Cooperative Extension weeds specialist Mike Moechnig said it has reached points as far south as Madison.

?EUR??,,????'??This is a very serious weed due to its competitive ability and the difficulty of control,?EUR??,,????'?? Moechnig said. ?EUR??,,????'??Every toadflax stem per square foot can reduce grass production by 2 percent. Producers should be on the lookout for this now, and consider control steps.?EUR??,,????'??
