Swarms of insects that look like mutant mosquitoes are invading Indianapolis. Mosquito control and Purdue University?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s extension service are getting flooded with calls about the bugs.
Crane flies, as they are commonly known, are widespread this time of year in Indiana. This year, however, they have been seen in greater numbers.
Extension Educator Steve Mayer said don?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t be concerned ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????+ Crane flies won?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t damage plants, turf or anything else. And the adults only live for five to ten days.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??ll try to encourage people to put up with them rather then put an insecticide out there,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? said Mayer.
The flies like moist areas and heavy vegetation. That?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s where they lay their eggs. And just because there are larger numbers of them this year, it doesn?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t mean we?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??ll see a large number next year.
