At a private estate in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Terassement Euro Landscaping encountered a unique installation challenge. The residence's walkways were immense, constructed of sometimes more than 20 rows deep of cobblestones in a linear pattern and had to have a permeable base to prevent flooding – one of the chief demands of the owners. Since traditional edging would not be enough for a firmly fixed installation, the landscapers turned to the pavers' manufacturer, Techo Bloc, for help. Their engineers designed and then made what they called "aluminum crosstie edging." These thin strips of metal were installed in between the paver rows every four to five feet, and interconnected by more crossties that run underneath the pavers. This matrix of crossties is attached to the traditional in-ground aluminum edging that lines the walkways. According to the landscaping team, this design keeps the pavers from budging and allows for the permeable base. The paver manufacturer admitted that it was a new concept for them and to their knowledge, had not been done before. But if you ever run into a similar situation, you will have to improvise on this method as Techo Bloc does not manufacture or sell these crossties.
