In 1981, Barbara Barlow, MD, then the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Harlem Hospital in New York City, established an injury prevention program which became the model for the Injury Free Coalition for Kids. Elimination of community hazards, such as dilapidated playgrounds, and the development of safe play spaces are essential for community safety. Having demonstrated effectiveness in reducing injury rates, the Harlem Hospital Injury Prevention Program was successfully replicated in hospitals around the country and developed into the Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK). IFCK has grown to include 42 chapters in 40 cities. Little Tikes Commercial has been the sole provider of playgrounds for IFCK since its inception. To date, there have been over 35 Little Tikes Commercial playgrounds installed in association with IFCK and their funding partner, The Allstate Foundation. The most recent community build installation took place in New Orleans in December. Over 300 people including Allstate employees, IFCK members, community members, and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu gathered to dedicate the Gelefish• playground to the community.
