In Memory Jerry Loomis, FASLA 1936-1998 ST. LOUIS, MO Jerry Loomis, FASLA, passed away last September in Boulder, Colorado. He learned that he had pancreatic cancer in July 1998, and chose to spend his remaining time traveling with his wife of forty years, Mary Jane. After his death, his body was cremated and the ashes scattered at a special place in Utah. A memorial ceremony was held at Winghaven in O'Fallon, Missouri. At the memorial, the Loomis Trace, a trail system for the Winghaven development, was introduced. Trees and daffodils were planted in his memory. Upon his arrival in 1972, Loomis brought a new attitude and direction to the way the profession of Landscape Architecture was practiced in St. Louis. He never doubted the ability of the Landscape Architect to take a primary role in the multidisciplinary design team. Establishing his own office in 1975, Loomis capitalized on his background to connect with clients who would understand and appreciate his unique site planning abilities. Projects such as the Maryville Centre set new standards for the importance of site planning, site amenities, landscape and maintenance for the suburban office building marketplace. The unique (to St. Louis) firm which Loomis created with his civil engineer and Landscape Architect partners-- Loomis Boulton Pickett-- was a landscape dominated firm which was capable of handling a project from conceptual site planning through completion of all development controlling all aspects of site design. LASN extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Jerry Loomis, FASLA.
