The Metro-North Railroad in New York is adding trees to its stations?EUR??,,????'??? parking lots. Last year it placed container trees on parking lots at the Campbell Hall and Harriman stations. Those trees did not fair well, so the idea was put forth to make square section cuts in the asphalt to accommodate in-ground planters.
Hundreds of pin oaks, river birches, maples and ashes were planted at Beacon Station. That $9.5 million renovation was completed in July, which included digging small wells with special hydrants to accommodate the trees?EUR??,,????'??? water needs.
Similar tree plantings are finishing at the Otisville and Salisbury Mills stations. At Salisbury Mills, honey locusts and Japanese zelkovas are the trees of choice.
Metro-North?EUR??,,????'???s green efforts have extended to offering discount train packages for the Chihuly exhibition at the New York Botanical Garden June 25 through October 29, 2006.
