?EUR??,,????'??Imagine,?EUR??,,????'?? to quote John Lennon, cars, trucks and buses banned from the streets from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. along a 6.9-mile stretch of streets through Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge, north to Park Avenue and the Upper East Side.
?EUR??,,????'??You may think I?EUR??,,????'???m a dreamer,?EUR??,,????'?? but New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has proposed ?EUR??,,????'??Summer Streets,?EUR??,,????'?? an experiment for a car-free zone in the Big Apple for three Saturdays?EUR??,,????'??+Aug. 9, 16 and 23.
Imagining this busy stretch of NYC without traffic is reminiscent of ?EUR??,,????'??The World, The Flesh and the Devil,?EUR??,,????'?? the 1959 black and white doomsday film in which Harry Belafonte is running about the empty streets of Manhattan in search of another living human (Ingrid Stevens, it turns out).
Imagine what landscape architects could do with Manhattan if the roads along the route cease to exist! How about a park running up what used to be Park Avenue?
?EUR??,,????'??We have never been afraid to try new ideas, especially the ones that have the potential to improve the quality of life,?EUR??,,????'?? said Mayor Bloomberg at a news conference in the East Village on Lafayette Street, part of the no vehicle route.
Mr. Bloomberg and the NYCDOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan seek to make the streets a haven for walkers and cyclists. Bicycle rentals will be available along the route, as well as fitness, dance and yoga classes for participants.
The north-south route is along Centre Street, Lafayette Street, Fourth Avenue and Park Avenue to 72nd Street. The southern half of 72nd Street from Park Avenue to Fifth Avenue will also be shut to vehicles to link to Central Park. The NYPD will direct traffic around the route and all parking will be restricted starting at midnight on the day of the event.
Temporarily closing streets to vehicles has been successfully engaged in London, Paris and Bogota. In Bogoa, the city?EUR??,,????'???s main streets were closed to motor vehicles every Sunday.
