Illinois ASLA Professional Awards

A President’s award went to Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects for the Gary Comer Youth Center green roof in Chicago. The garden has a flower garden and is also growing potatoes and carrots.

The Illinois ASLA just published their project award winners for 2008.

The chapter presented two President’s awards, three Honor awards and three Merit awards. The project submittals were judge by an Iowa ASLA panel.

The second President’s award also went to Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects for a residential garden in Chicago. The gravel garden has free-form plantings, Eden Stone slabs and large birch trees.

Located in a poor and crime-ridden South Shore, Chicago neighborhood, the Gary Comer Youth Center offers a welcoming space for indoor activity. Now, its 8,160 square foot green roof gives youth an area for outdoor horticultural activities.

The landscape architect worked with the architect and donor to develop a green roof that includes a flower and vegetable garden. It’s hoped the center will employ a full-time gardener to enhance the gardens as an educational program and to maintain the gardens. The youth learn about growing food and become more environmentally aware. Potatoes and carrots are growing. The 18 to 24 inches of soil will also allow growing of cabbage, sunflowers, lettuces and strawberries. The two-year old garden is still evolving.
