Burnham and Bennett?EUR??,,????'???s plan for Chicago, published in 1909.

?EUR??,,????'??It?EUR??,,????'???s never too early to start planning,?EUR??,,????'?? if not a truism is probably good advise. And the Illinois chapter of ASLA (ILASLA) is doing just that?EUR??,,????'??+calling for volunteers (?EUR??,,????'??NOW,?EUR??,,????'?? their newsletter specifies) to help get ready to host the 2009 ASLA annual meeting in, where else, Chicago, Sept. 18-21.

That the 2009 event will be in Chicago is appropriate, says the ILASLA, because it will mark the centennial of the plan of Chicago by Burnham & Bennett. Beginning in 1906, architect and planner Burnham and his assistant Edward Bennett began laying out the first comprehensive plans for Chicago, part of the City Beautiful movement. The plan included French-inspired public works construction?EUR??,,????'??+fountains and boulevards radiating from a central, domed municipal palace?EUR??,,????'??+”Paris on the Prairie” was one phrase heard.

ILASLA says there is MUCH work to be done. If you want to help, contact chair person Richard Twitchell at 312-285-5801 or at asla2009@yahoo.com.
