In December 2005 the Illinois ASLA Chapter began efforts to upgrade the Illinois Landscape Architect Title Act, passed in 1989, to a full practice act. The chapter believes a practice act would ensure a higher standard of landscape architecture and ?EUR??,,????'?????<

On Jan. 20, 2006 Senator Ira Silverstein (D-8th District, Illinois) introduced the Practice Act (SB-2574) to the Illinois legislature. The bill has undergone a few amendments and went to the rules committee on June 4, 2006. The bill proposes the Practice Act go into effect Jan. 2007.

The current law (Title Act)

  1. Prohibits use of the ?EUR??,,????'?????<
  2. Requires licensees to meet educational standards, attain two years of supervised professional experience and complete the three-day Landscape Architect Registration Examination (LARE)
  3. Allows unlicensed persons to perform landscape architecture services

The proposed law: (Practice Act)

  • Prohibits unlicensed persons from either performing landscape architecture services or calling themselves landscape architects.
  • Creates disciplinary procedures for licensees.
  • Opens the door to requiring continuing education for licensees.
  • Does not alter existing provisions for testing, education and experience required for licensing.
