The International Landscape Lighting Institute (illi) will host their Intensive Design and Field Training Course (IDFTC) in Troy, N.Y., and will host two sessions:

  • September 19 – 23
  • October 17 - 21
The 2014 Intensive Design and Field Training Course will be held at Saluki Park, a six-acre property in Troy, New York. The five-day, four-night hands-on course consists of a maximum of 18 practicing professionals and students. Seventy-two graduates of the Intensive Design and Field Training Course make up the mentor team.

Attendees will work as part of a team designing and installing a landscape lighting mockup for one area that is selected by each team on the first day. Attendees will present to the public landscape lighting mockups as the final assignment of this course. During the IDFTC attendees get the chance to explore and experiment with the newest equipment. The lighting industry is still in a technology-change phase as LED becomes more prevalent, so, choice of lamp between traditional halogen, LED replacement, and/or LED integrated requires careful consideration.

Each day will include morning lectures, afternoon workshops/demonstrations and evening field mock-up work. The IDFTC follows a course outline that is given upon registration with a copy of the 3rd Edition Landscape Lighting Book. Janet Moyer, Founder of illi, and an instructor at the IDFTC, uses a variety of up-to-date teaching techniques, including the "flipped classroom" created by Sal Kahn. With many different teaching and approaches, attendees of the IDFTC receive an abundance of information.

After this course attendees will be able to:
  • Describe the process of designing and implementing a landscape lighting design and installation mockup.
  • Identify different manufacturer's lamp and fixture equipment and use it in their mockup designs.
  • Analyze differences between lamps and fixtures used in landscape lighting and conceptual and contractual record documentation.
  • Compare Halogen versus LEDs versus HID sources, as well as materials used in fixture construction.
  • Compare mounting methods at grade and below grade while working with a certified arborist.
  • Design and temporarily install a landscape lighting mockup that they will present to a public audience.
Continuing Education:
The IDFTC is registered with the following organizations that provide continuing education.
  • IES
  • AIA
