IF Names 2013 Excellence in Education Award Recipient

The IF is a 501(c)(3) organization established by the Irrigation Association, which focuses on three strategic initiatives: career awareness, education and resources.

The Irrigation Foundation has named Cathie Lavis, PhD, of Kansas State University, the recipient of the 2013 Excellence in Education Award.

Established in 2012, the Excellence in Education Award honors an educator who teaches irrigation, water management and/or water conservation in affiliation with a university or community college. This award recognizes academics that demonstrate a strong commitment to equipping the irrigation industry with educated professionals who develop efficient irrigation solutions that will protect water and the environment.

Lavis has been a long-time supporter of educating the irrigation industry's future work force and has worked with the Irrigation Association since the late 1990s to develop standardized course materials for use at the collegiate level. Her contributions to the industry were highlighted in award nominations submitted by the head of KSU's Horticulture, Forestry and Recreation Resources Department and by two of her former students.

"My prime instructional goal is to offer up-to-date irrigation information that will provide students with a firm understanding and appreciation for landscape irrigation practice," said Lavis. "My approach combines rigor with hands-on learning that results in students prepared to work in an industry that faces looming water issues while creating environments that benefit us all."

Lavis will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the upcoming Irrigation Show and Education Conference in Austin, Texas (November 4th – 8th), where she will formally accept her award.
