April's a lovely month of burgeoning buds and fragrant flowers epitomized by the blooming of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C.

D.C., of course, is also home to that most loathsome of acronyms???the IRS and its looming April 15 deadline.

However, in keeping with nature's abundance and wonder, the month definitely belongs to landscaping. April is also designated Landscape Architecture Month, Earth Day (April 22) and is the birthday month of Frederick Law Olmsted (April 26), founder of the American landscape architecture profession.

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is dedicating April to a new campaign called "Designing Our Future." It's all about educating the public about sustainable landscapes and landscape architecture as a career choice www.asla.org/sustainablelandscapes.

"More than ever, we must recognize that the space between, on top of and around buildings is as important, if not more, in creating a sustainable world," said ASLA President Gary Scott, FASLA. "This April I hope people will learn the role landscape architects play in ???Designing Our Future.'"

National Landscape Architecture Month will also involve the 48 ASLA state chapters doing their own take on promoting the profession.
