Hy-Vee, an employee-owned corporation operating 224 retail stores in seven Midwestern states, is giving away 200,000 trees ready for planting. The company is donating the trees to schools and organizations in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.
A number of community groups and more than 500 schools throughout Hy-Vee?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s seven-state region are participating. Those states are Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota.
The Arbor Day Foundation selected Colorado blue spruce and Norway spruce seedlings, as they grow best in the Midwest. The trees are being delivered to schools throughout September.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our goal is to get children involved in bettering their neighborhoods and communities by having them plant these trees at their homes and schools,?EUR??,,????'?????<? explained Jon Wendel, Hy-Vee vice president of marketing. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We want to encourage young people to take an interest in doing what they can to help sustain the world we share.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Some of the trees will be planted on school grounds, but students will also be taking them home to plant.
This is both an educational tool about the environment, but will also help rebuild the tree population of a number of Midwestern communities that loss trees during the heavy flooding this spring.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit conservation organization of nearly one million members with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees.
