With all the talk about bailouts to various financial entities, you probably don?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t know, unless you?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re from Iowa, that the government is spending your tax dollars for a completely warranted bailout, namely disaster relief.
On Dec. 19, 2008, with the end of the year in sight (you can see the new year from Alaska), U.S. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) added $72 million to Iowa?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s disaster recovery from those severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that ravaged the state. Earlier in 2008, HUD allocated $85 million to Iowa as a first installment of disaster funding. In Oct. 2008, HUD anteed an additional $71.7 million, and another $125 million in November. The money derives from HUD?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Since 1974, HUD has allocated approximately $120 billion to state and local governments from CDBG.
At this writing, HUD reports it will do a year-end review of the additional needs of other states for long-term recovery needs from 2008 disasters. HUD expects that bill will be an additional $4 billion.
In Iowa, the fed dollars will go to:
