Housing Starts Rise in November

From November of 2009 to November 2010, it decreased 5.8 percent, with decreases of 7.7 percent for single units and 5.3 percent for 5 or more units. The November rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 72,000.

Privately-owned housing starts in November were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 555,000. This is 3.9 percent (±12 percent)* above the revised October estimate of 534,000, but is 5.8 percent (±12 percent)* below the November 2009 rate of 589,000.

Single-family housing starts in November were at a rate of 465,000; this is 6.9 percent (±13.5 percent)* above the revised October figure of 435,000.

In the past year the Northeast was the region that fared the best with  overall increases of 19.7 percent for starts and 19.1 percent for single units. The West fared the worst with an overall decrease of 14.2 percent and drop of 23.6 percent for single units.
