Housing Starts Move Upward

Single-family housing starts in April were at a rate of 593,000; this is 10.2 percent above the revised March figure of 538,000. The April rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 68,000.


Privately-owned housing starts in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 672,000. This is 5.8 percent above the revised March estimate of 635,000 and is 40.9 percent above the revised April 2009 rate of 477,000.

For the year to date the country saw a total increase of privately owned housing units started of 24.2 percent, with an increase of 48.6 percent for single units, with declines of 37.4 percent for 2 to 4 units and 39.6 percent for 5 or more units.

The Northeast was the region that fared the best in the country with increases of 33.2 percent total and 34.4 percent for single units. The Midwest fared the worst at 13.8 percent total and 49.7 percent single unit increases.
