Housing Completions Down in January

For new privately-owned housing units completed from January 2009 to January 2010, the national total declined by 15.3 percent with a decrease of 24.3 percent for one unit structures and an increase of 3.9 percent for 5 or more units.

Privately-owned housing completions in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 659,000. This is 12.4 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????7.8 percent) below the revised December estimate of 752,000 and is 15.3 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????10.5 percent) below the January 2009 rate of 778,000.

Single-family housing completions in January were at a rate of 427,000; this is 12.9 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????7.1 percent) below the revised December rate of 490,000. The January rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 215,000.

The Northeast fared the best with an overall increase of 8 percent and virtually no change for single units. The Midwest was the region that did the worst with an overall decrease of 30.8 percent and decrease of 26.3 percent for single units. – Courtesy of US Census Bureau
