Housing Completions Boost September

Single-family housing completions in September were at a rate of 501,000; this is 4.8 percent (???????(R)???????+???????(R)??????oe???????(R)???????+???????(R)????????14.2 percent)* above the revised August rate of 478,000. The September rate for units in buildings with five units or more was 138,000.

Privately-owned housing completions in September were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 648,000.  This is 7.3 percent (±14.3 percent)* above the revised August estimate of 604,000, but is 10.1 percent (±13.6 percent)* below the September 2009 rate of 721,000. This includes an increase of 4.4 percent for single units, but decrease of 38.1 percent for 5 or more units.

Overall, the Northeast was the region that fared the best with a decrease of 3 percent, with an increase of 12.3 percent for single units. The West was the region that fared the worst, with an overall decrease of 17.6 percent and 1.9 decrease for single units.
