Step inside any Four Seasons Hotel, and you are greeted by elegant surroundings and dramatic lighting architecture. The Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California is another example in this upscale tradition.
Lighting Design Alliance (LDA), with offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Fort Collins and Dubai designed the lighting for the Four Seasons Hotel landscape project. LDA principal Kyllene Jones and designer Kristin Pickar-Knussmann led the firm?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s efforts. The Westlake Village Four Seasons Hotel desired a lighting design to compliment the hotel?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s lush surroundings.
LDA focused light on only the most attractive elements and most colorful plants, and designated where to install fixtures in the landscape, carefully selecting which trees to light. LDA chose HK Lighting Group fixtures, which feature integral ballasts (or transformers) and a long whip fully wired and ready to go. This was done so that the electrician just had to wire them to concealed J-boxes in the general vicinity indicated. From there, the fixtures were powered on, and LDA located and aimed the fixture at the desired elements. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????This process is called hot aiming and is essential for a successful lighting design,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? explained Pickar-Knussmann. Additionally, because ground cover could potentially change from what was shown on the landscape drawings (and can grow over time), LDA used HK Lighting Groups adjustable stake. The fixture height can be easily raised to 24 inches A.F.F. Adjusting the height can be done while the fixture is turned on and years after it has been installed.
LDA used specified 3000K color-temperature sources designed to visually coordinate landscape design with the warm colors of the hotel?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s interior and exterior lighting. Both 39-watt T6/3000K and 70-watt T6/3000K metal halide fixtures frame views throughout the landscape. LDA specified 70-watt T6/3000K metal halide landscape lights with regressed lamps to up-light 70-foot-tall Sequoia trees. Concealed, tree-mounted 39-watt T6/3000K metal halide fixtures with light-blue glass lenses create moonlight effects and shadows. LDA prevented ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????hot spots?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? of light by concealing light sources, placing fixtures behind and between rocks and plants.
To maximize the water?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s reflection at the pond, lights were not placed in the water. Rather, 37-watt MR16/1R fixtures up-light a large, porous philosopher?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s stone sculpture in the pond?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s center.
LDA did not attach lighting to the handcrafted Chinese pagoda to respect the original structure. Instead, in-grade 50-watt MR16/IR fixtures up-light the interior structure and surrounding rock wall. ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????We decided to go with an internal glow effect by mounting in-grade adjustable low voltage up-lights in the poured concrete slab the pagoda was mounted on. These up-lights lined up with the structural columns, so they not only illuminated the ceiling, but also grazed up the columns for a 2-in-1 lighting effect. We used low-voltage lamps for the lower light and heat output,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????explained Pickar-Knussmann.
A combination of Quartz T4 150-watt and 250-watt underwater line-voltage fixtures create multiple levels of light at the main water feature of waterfalls. Controlling these fixtures with several circuits in a staggered wiring layout provides a cost-effective ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????dimming system.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? Low-wattage metal halide lamps come in small envelopes and pack quite a punch. You want to conceal the fixture as much as possible so your attention goes to the beautiful object you are highlighting, not the fixture that is doing the work. Low-voltage IR halogen is a great source for smaller plants, especially flowering ones in the red hue.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Mock-ups are your best friend when it comes to determining lamp sources and fixture locations.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? We created landscape mock-ups before finalizing our drawings. We determined which trees looked best with the trunk highlighted and the canopy in silhouette, and which looked best when the trunk was highlighted and you looked up the tree, and which trees canopies looked beautiful when you placed the fixtures at least 20 feet away from the trunk.?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? says Pickar-Knussmann.
The project design began in September 2003. Construction was complete in January 2007. Visit the company online at: www.lightingdesignalliance.com.
