For forty years, Hord Coplan Macht has been creating distinct places to live, work, learn, and play. Their Landscape Architecture and Planning Studio serves a diverse clientele across a broad range of project types including urban and mixed-use developments, community and campus planning, historic and cultural landscapes, park and open space design and healing and educational environments.

Hord Coplan Macht — Loyola University Maryland: Campus Gateway, Streetscape and Donnelly Hall Addition, Baltimore, Md.

The Donnelly Science Center provided an opportunity to re-envision the intersection by developing a setting for the building, enhancing the southern gateway to the campus, and improving the Cold Spring Lane streetscape. The new streescape creates a pedestrian experience and serves as a perimeter for the campus. With the introduction of a stonewall, a space is created for an additional campus paver walk and tree-planting zone. London Planetrees, planted along three consecutive blocks, frame the walk and provide shade.
Sustainable design and an integrated storm water approach were central to the material selections. The majority of the sidewalks are constructed of permeable concrete pavers and the parking area was reconstructed with permeable concrete.
The landscape architect led the site design by working with the architect and university and played a major role in obtaining community and city approvals.

This project transformed an early 20th century manufacturing plant into a 21st century office complex. The project is located in South Baltimore north of I-95 adjacent to the Locust Point neighborhood. The master plan proposed mixed-uses of office, retail and multifamily residential.
The landscape weaves the historical and the modern. It is contemporary with a feeling of industrial grit. Walls of warm wood, cool concrete and crunchy gravel provide a tactile garden around the glass link building. Plantings treat storm water from the hardscape.
The connecting path between the parking areas and the glass addition feature a series of jogs and partitions, providing a variety of experiences and outdoor spaces for employees.

This project transformed an early 20th century manufacturing plant into a 21st century office complex. The project is located in South Baltimore north of I-95 adjacent to the Locust Point neighborhood. The master plan proposed mixed-uses of office, retail and multifamily residential.

South Capitol Park comprises six acres of the historic Pennsylvania State Capitol grounds. The landscape architects led a team through master planning, construction documents and construction of this $10 million rehabilitation.
Challenges included deteriorated materials, antiquated storm drainage and erosion. The park lacked smaller spaces for seating and social interaction. Tired plantings and mismatched furnishings contributed to the poor appearance. Certain features added over many years were incompatible with the historic character, including plantings, furnishings, pavement, rip rap and a wall at the Mexican Monument.
The proposed design resolved the challenges into a cohesive plan for the park with new enhancements that greatly improved accessibility, sustainability and visitor experience.

Fenwick Station is an urban residential project geared to residents who desire to be located near Washington DC Metro and downtown Silver Spring. The project is a redevelopment of an obsolete post office.
The landscape architect designed spaces that are contemporary, artful and engaging social places. The public space and theme for the art were inspired by the site's historic connections with the railroad. The landscape includes a public plaza, streetscape with integrated storm water facilities, amenity courtyard for residents and a 6th floor rooftop terrace.
The main plaza utilizes a multifunctional trellis to define the western edge. Designed by the landscape architect, the structure provides shade, seating and integrates a "Capital Bike Share" station.

The community has a strong sustainability emphasis and has secured the County's new Green Neighborhoods. In 2011 the redevelopment won the USGBC Wintergreen Innovation Award.

Greenbriar Park is a 25-acre park located in Montgomery County, Maryland, featuring trails, interpretive play, soccer, basketball and volleyball, a forested stream valley, re-created meadows, and integrated storm water management. The landscape architects led a multidisciplinary team, including public agency staff, through a collaborative process beginning with a sustainable sites initiative evaluation, through design development and construction administration.
Design elements were subtly abstracted to represent topography and regional materials and are supported by interpretive signage.
Site features were sensitively located by manipulating topography, integrating innovative stormwater management, and capitalizing on natural views. Locally sourced materials were used in walls, paving and piers. All plant material was custom grown in the public agency's nursery.

The design of the site draws inspiration from the three creeks within proximity, with three distinct experiential learning trails, each with a historical or ecological theme relating to the specific creek. All three 'trails' lead students from the building breakout spaces on an educational journey as they meander to the playground areas. The site design included master planning for a 25-acre site to determine the location for the new PK-8 school, athletic fields, parking, play areas and community connections. The PK-8 site amenities include parking, parent and bus drop-off, play apparatus areas, hard court areas, play fields, and site circulation. Services performed for Three Creeks School include site master plan, City of Arvada Entitlement Process and schematic design through construction administration.
