Louisiana contractors say they haven’t noticed a downturn in new home construction.
Contractors said they are hearing about a “slowdown” from the lumber companies and from some contractors who are building speculative homes – ones they will try to sell later themselves.
“I’m not seeing a slowdown,” Richard Paul Boutte, a contractor in New Iberia, said. “I’m staying about the same. I have work on the weekend. I could work every day.”
Steven Debuse, a contractor and president of the Teche Area Builders Association, used to build speculative houses but now only builds customers’ houses because the other is “too risky.”
Like Boutte, Debuse said he also is staying busy. He said as long as the economy remains strong here, contractors will keep building.
“We’re not going to see the same thing that’s happening in Boston,” Debuse said.
“The oil industry is the main artery for South Louisiana and as long as it stays strong, the housing market will stay strong.”
