HOA Okays Fake Grass

A HOA in Greenbrook, Fla. has approved the use of artificial turf for a playground in the Lakewood Ranch gated community. Alternascapes will be performing the $35,840 fake grass installation featuring two-inch blades with a five-inch drainage sub-base.

Harry Mosher may be the closest thing Lakewood Ranch has to a playground expert.

Mosher, who lives in Greenbrook, was an elementary school teacher in Indianapolis for 35 years and was part of playground design team for some schools.

Harry Mosher was pleased recently when the Greenbrook Village Association came up with the idea to remove the current mulch surface under the playground equipment at Adventure Park and replace it with a $35,840 artificial green grass with a two-inch blade.

The new grass and a forest green canvas shade canopy to go with it got the green light from District 4 supervisors recently to become the first two items coming through the pipeline of a Greenbrook open space plan.

The shade canopy, to be installed by Miller Recreation Equipment and Design of Bradenton, has two separate structures. One is costing Greenbrook $9,597 and is 20-feet by 25-feet and the other will cost $15,072 and is 25-feet by 36-feet, Headley said.

Supervisor Mike Spring became a fan of the new surface.

Alternascapes, a Sarasota company that sells and installs the grass product, will excavate five inches below the final grade and install a sub-base drainage material. The grass goes on top of that, Headley said.
