HNP Landscape Architecture

Birmingham, Alabama

Founded in 1979, HNP Landscape Architecture has grown into a full-service design firm with a diverse portfolio led by a team of Landscape Architects who are active members of professional organizations, reflecting the firm's commitment to excellence and innovation within the field. Athletic facility planning and design is a core strength of HNP, with experience ranging from practice fields and public park complexes to NCAA-level venues, including fields, tracks, and courts. Over the years, HNP has broadened its services to include extensive partnerships with schools, colleges, and universities. Beyond athletics, HNP continues to deliver traditional landscape architecture projects, showing the firm's dedication to maintaining a varied project mix. This stems from the belief that project diversity sharpens creative thinking, promotes budget-conscious solutions, and leads to well-rounded, innovative design outcomes. This approach has earned HNP a strong base of long-standing, repeat clients - a testament to the trust and value the firm brings to every collaboration.

Randall Family Park & Trailhead Northern Riverwalk; Tuscaloosa, AL

The Randall Family Park & Trailhead and the contiguous 0.6-mile path represent the initial phase of the Northern Riverwalk project by the city of Tuscaloosa. The versatile greenspace encourages use by the community, and the overlook pavilion provides grilling areas, restrooms, shade, and a party space with views of the river. Play areas, hammock stands, bike repair stations, water fountains with bottle filling, and custom art sculptures are a few of the amenities that add intrigue and value for park visitors. Along the trailways, interpretative signage offers explanations of wetlands and pollinators, while also educating visitors on the importance of the Black Warrior River. The project received the 2024 ASLA Merit Award in General Design. PHOTO CREDIT: BOB FARLEY

Auburn University Rane Culinary Science Center; Auburn, AL

This facility blends a unique learning environment with a luxury boutique hotel and culinary teaching restaurant, including a roof garden and pool atop the boutique hotel. The garden is managed by horticultural students and supplies the restaurant with fresh vegetables and flowers. The compact site has a striking urban feel with various outdoor dining spaces. A courtyard between the hotel and food court was designed with synthetic turf and provides a unique space for outdoor entertaining and campus events. Additionally, the private hotel entrance features an arrival court and upscale parking with a European flavor, also designed by HNP. The project was awarded (LEED) Silver Certification. Auburn University National Pan-Hellenic Council Legacy Plaza; Auburn, AL

Along one of the university's main pedestrian corridors, the National Pan-hellenic Council Legacy Plaza features markers representing each of the historically African American Greek organizations, also known as the Divine Nine. The granite pillars are inscribed with each organization's Greek letters and crest, along with names for the eight chapters already established at Auburn. The central courtyard features shade trees set in slate chips with seating and table sets. In addition to serving as an event and gathering space, the Legacy Plaza is a testament to the university's charge to create a more inclusive environment and the student body's desire to ensure their peers are equally represented. Ole Miss Band Practice Field; Oxford, MS

The University of Mississippi's Pride of the South marching band now has a full-size replica of the Hollingsworth Field at Ole Miss' stadium. The new $5.4 million practice field features synthetic turf with the Old Miss script logo at center field. This new space is more of an outdoor classroom, providing the benefits of instructional efficiency for faculty members and accelerated student learning for students. The synthetic turf and new drainage system minimizes instructional time lost due to wet weather, as the band can start practicing again in a short amount of time, whereas a natural field would delay their ability to use the field for at least a day. Newton Park Tennis and Pickleball Courts; Prattville, AL

In March of 2024, Newton Park reopened with five new tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and a concessions and restroom facility. HNP master-planned the layout and provided construction drawings for the courts, landscaping, site furniture, and irrigation. The courts feature new LED lights on a timer so games can be played at night. This cost-effective option promotes safety and gives those using the courts more flexibility to enjoy the park. Additional improvements were completed in June of 2025, with the redevelopment of five existing tennis courts into 14 pickleball courts, additional tennis courts, and enhancements to the existing parking lot. Fort Payne High School Sports Facilities; Fort Payne, AL

HNP joined Fort Payne City Schools to redesign and renovate Fort Payne High School's baseball, softball, football/soccer, and track and field facilities. The project is highlighted by the replacement of existing natural grass and rubber track surfaces with subsurface drainage, synthetic turf, concrete plazas, and a track system including compacted base, asphalt, and surface. The GameOn turf system tufts graphics directly into the rolled turf, enabling the Wildcat logo and Fort Payne branding across the fields, as well as mow patterns never seen on a synthetic turf field. The baseball and softball system utilizes variable infills to replicate ball behavior more closely tied to natural field performance. The whole project received an ASBA Distinguished Single Field Facility and Silver Award in 2023.

As seen in LASN magazine, October 2025.
