Hill Studio is a multi-disciplinary firm of architects, Landscape Architects, planners, and architectural historians. They specialize in creative and collaborative design solutions that celebrate the unique character and assets of the communities in which they work. Established in Roanoke, Virginia in 1988, the firm has successfully participated in over 2,500 projects, providing a wide range of services in lead and team-member roles. Their clients include local governments, state and federal agencies, non-profit organizations, and private individuals and companies. Clients are directly involved as participating members to produce results specifically tailored to their needs. With this collaborative approach, Hill Studio has won over 50 awards from numerous local and international professional societies for their unique designs and creative approach to projects. Hill Studio features one principal, two Landscape Architects, three architects, two community planners, three preservationists, and four design support staff.


Christiansburg Huckleberry Park, Christiansburg, Virginia

A: The driving concept behind Christiansburg Huckleberry Park was to strike a winning balance of passive and active recreational opportunities that serve the citizens of the Town of Christiansburg and park users from around the region and state. To fulfill this, the park's amenities include artificial turf, multi-purpose fields, and support equipment that accommodates both recreation and sports tournaments. The site also includes support buildings, an all-inclusive and multi-generational playground, a fitness challenge course, a spray pad, a dog park, walking trails, and pavilions
and gazebos.

Elmwood Park,
Roanoke, Virginia

B: Over the course of the last century, Elmwood Park has evolved from the distinguished home and gardens of Payton Terry in the late 19th century to the downtown's premier greenspace. Completed in late 2013, the renovated park includes several major design components: an art walk, a performance stage, an amphitheater, and a fountain walk. These elements are linked through sidewalks, lighting, planting, and signage. Elmwood Park now accommodates up to 5,000 people in the amphitheater as well as food trucks, and vendors. In addition, the interactive fountains and sculptures in the park entertain diverse visitors of all ages by providing places to eat, play, and socialize.

Western Virginia Forensics Laboratory, Roanoke, Virginia

C: Hill Studio worked with SFCS Architects in developing the new Western Forensics Laboratory in Roanoke, Virginia. The site and landscape design were carefully considered, as the building and view from Peters Creek Road would be subdued and unobtrusive in the landscape. The use of native trees, shrubs, and wildflower meadows served as the foreground of the architecture. Sustainable Sites and water wonservation strategies were employed to reach a Gold LEED rating.

Lake Jiyang Master Plan, Zhangjiagang, China

D: Hill Studio sponsored a team of designers for an international competition to design a new sector of the City of Zhang Jia Gang along the Yangtze River in Southeastern China. Their winning competition entry was oriented to make a resort community around a large open borrow pit in a formerly agricultural area. The resulting master plan provides residences for 30,000 people, a five-star resort on a lake, a wildlife preserve, a research and development park, and many traditional and integrated ways of marketing a lot of the holistic nutritional and exercise arts.

The Gainsboro Neighborhood History Walk, Roanoke, Virginia

D: The History Walk creates a vital pedestrian connection between the Roanoke Higher Education Center and the Claude Moore Culinary School. The site also illustrates the life of local attorney and civil rights attorney Oliver White Hill who served as counsel in the Virginia lawsuit that was combined with others in Brown v. Board of Education (1954).

Salem Streetscape, Salem, Virginia

E: Hill Studio worked closely with Mattern & Craig Engineers and the City of Salem to design and develop an urban streetscape atmosphere in the city's downtown. The multi-phased project connects Roanoke College to downtown restaurants, bars, and shops. Streetscape improvements included bump-outs with plantings and seating for dining, string lighting across Main Street, landscape lighting, unit paving, crosswalks, and site furnishings.
