Fort Worth, Texas is, of course, named after its 1849 fort, no vestige of which remains. This northern Texas town grew in prosperity as a stop along the Chisholm Trail, the route for herding cattle north to market.
According to the official Fort Worth website, the former cowtown (there?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s a Cowtown Coliseum in the Stockyards National Historic District) is the 17th-largest city in the nation (pop. 702,850), the fifth fastest growing city of 100,000 or more in the U.S., the ninth safest city in the U.S. and ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+? the numero uno tourist destination in Texas.
Today, Fort Worth is prospering from the natural gas reserves under the city and the new horizontal drilling technology.
Not all aspects of the city are booming. Heritage Plaza, part of the 112-acre Heritage Park, sits atop the bluffs overlooking the Trinity River. Fort Worth Parks & Rec. closed the plaza and park in April 2007 for lack of maintenance. The plaza, designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, debuted in 1976, part of the nation?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s bicentennial celebration. A city this size has an ample number of parks, 228, according to Fort Worth Parks & Rec., but clearly not the resources to maintain them all.
Heritage Plaza has made a number of ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????endangered historic?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? lists, including the Preservation Texas?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'???? Most Endangered Historic Places 2009 https://preservationtexas.org/endangered/2009.htm. Historic Fort Worth, Inc. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????nominated?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? the plaza.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Like the other sites on our 2009 endangered list, Heritage Plaza reflects the increasing awareness across our state of the importance of preserving structures that have played important roles in the history of our state,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? said Libby Buuck (spelled correctly), president of Preservation Texas, Inc., a statewide partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????From churches and schools to parks and private residences, the sites represent places that are as important to our history and way of life as longhorn cattle and 10-gallon hats.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
The local media adds that the plaza pumps and electrical equipment had worn out and there was no lighting.
The local media also reports that in 2007 the nonprofit group Streams and Valleys hired the Carter & Burgess firm to assess Heritage Plaza. The firm reported residents felt the park was an ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????unsafe environment,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? and the seating area next to a steep drop had no guardrail. Carter & Burgess estimated the cost of repairs at $7.3 million, which included bringing the plaza into ADA compliance.
