Heinzerling Keynotes ASLA Closing

Lisa Heinzerling, JD, was the lead author of the winning briefs in Massachusetts v. EPA, in which the Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that the Clean Air Act gives EPA the authority to regulate greenhouse gases.

Lisa Heinzerling, an associate administrator in the EPA Office of Policy, Economics and Innovation, will be the closing speaker for the ASLA's 2009 annual meeting on September 21 at 3:00 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The session is sponsored by Landscape Forms.

Heinzerling was a member of President Obama's EPA transition team and has served as the senior climate policy counsel since his inauguration.

She has been a law professor at Georgetown University since 1993, and in 2003 won the faculty teaching award. She has been a visiting professor at the Harvard and Yale law schools. Her scholarship in environmental law has been published in the Yale Law Journal, Harvard Law Review, University of Chicago Law Review and the Georgetown Law Journal.

She earned an A.B. from Princeton University and her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School, where she was editor-in-chief of the Law Review. She clerked for Judge Richard Posner on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and for Justice William Brennan Jr. on the U.S. Supreme Court. Before joining the Georgetown faculty, she was an assistant attorney general in Massachusetts, specializing in environmental law.

Lisa Heinzerling and Frank Ackerman are coauthors of Priceless: On Knowing the Price of Everything and the Value of Nothing, published in 2004. The book examines cost-benefit analysis, an economic model often used to direct a broad range of government policies. The authors concluded the method does not reflect the true values of human health, life, ecosystems and other priceless elements.

Heinzerling is also a member-scholar of the Center for Progressive Reform, a think tank for health, safety and environmental protection.
