2024 Yearbook / 2025 Forecast
In November, the American Hospital Association (AHA) reported on the state of rural hospitals, which comprise 35% of those in the U.S. The AHA found that nearly half have 25 or fewer beds. Furthermore, since 2010, at least 148 rural hospitals have closed or converted, forcing Americans to travel further for care, especially for emergency and maternity services. Rural Americans also face higher rates of chronic diseases and shorter lifespans compared to urban populations. Rising costs for labor, drugs, and supplies further strain these facilities, limiting investments in programs and infrastructure.
