Hawaiian State Legislature Introduces Uniform Standard Bill

CLARB Developed Licensure Standard
by Rebecca Radtke, LASN

Hawaii has new legislation that was introduced and backed by the Hawaii Chapter of the ASLA.

The Hawaiian State Legislature introduced Senate Bill 1625 - a bill that would adopt a uniform standard for landscape architecture licensure - on January 27th in front of the Senate.

The bill follows up on the prior vote where the board of professional engineers, architects, surveyors, and landscape architects were in favor of adopting a uniform standard - which was developed by the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) in 2022. The legislature found that in adopting the standard it would allow the board to reduce the years of experience required for most applicants seeking licensure while continuing to ensure the protection of the public and environment across the state. The bill will also allow for the profession to create consistent requirements.

Further, the Hawaii Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) supports the adoption of the standard.

LASN will continue to monitor this legislation as updates happen.
