The Dimensions Educational Foundation (DERF), in conjunction with the Los Angeles Unified School Department (LAUSD), established a collaborative partnership to create a nature explore project at the Haddon Early Education existing school site. The existing playground was demolished, existing trees were saved in place, and new trees were added where appropriate. It was the intention of the team to renovate the playground using nature explore concepts in order to provide outdoor learning and activity environment for the many benefits that a natural environment provides. Outdoor activities include decomposed granite pathways, gardening areas, water area, messy materials area, climbing and balance area, sand area, music and performance area, and outdoor classrooms gathering, and group mounds all framed by lush landscape and colorful shrubs and perennial low water use conserving plants as required by the California state mandated water ordinance. A smart weather-based irrigation controller is utilized to insure water conservation.
