Tom Oslund, FASLA, FAAR, Principal and Design Director of Oslund and Associates, started as an architecture student at the University of Minnesota. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Then I went to a lecture by Dan Kiley and I changed my major the very next day.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Oslund goes on to say, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve been very happy with that decision and not just because the whole journey has been great?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+?Dan Kiley became a really good friend and confidant. After school, I worked for awhile in Minnesota, then went to Vermont and finally ended up attending Harvard?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s Graduate School of Design.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Oslund is a recipient of the Rome Prize Fellowship in Landscape Architecture from the American Academy in Rome, has written 58 articles, done an HGTV Web presentation called French and Fantastic, participated in eleven art exhibitions and won 36 awards.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????m Norwegian with a Viking spirit inside?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????I need to have a lot of light.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
There, Oslund got his Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????The first studio course I attended at Harvard was with Pete Walker, Frank Gehry and Claus Oldenburg and those influences sent me on my present trajectory.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Pete, who has been very influential both as an educator and a professional, exposed me to the connection between art and the landscape. Frank wasn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t a superstar then, but he brought a different way of looking at architecture. And obviously Claus, a large piece sculptor who placed things in the landscape, had an interest in how all three?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????landscape architecture, architecture and sculpture, intertwined.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Oslund is a registered Landscape Architect in Minnesota, Wisconsin, California, Indiana, Utah, New York, Illinois and Iowa. He has had a long and distinguished career as a professor, lecturer and design critic since 1981.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????We?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve been very lucky with awards. We just keep doing what we?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve been doing all along and it seems people love what we?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re doing. It resonates with them. But the real explanation could be that the client has always been an integral part of our process from start to finish. They come to us in the first place. One of the important things Dan taught me was to be as discriminating as you can about the work you take. If someone has other ideas or disagrees, then we point them to the right person.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Harvard formed Oslund in many ways, but as a child, he spent a lot of time drawing. His grandfather, who lived with them, was a quite accomplished draughtsman. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????He?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d do these really cool drawings that were cutaways of machinery,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? says Oslund. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????There were a lot of things circling around me that influenced my development. I would say I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????m a landscape architect who does art for work.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve had a very strong interest in materials and the materiality of the region. We?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????re very fortunate here in the southern portion of the state to have dolomitic limestone (travertine) and granite in the northern and central parts of the state. By using things that come from terra firma in the design, the design becomes a very powerful thing. The rock brings a connection back to place, which is a grounding in condition.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
When asked about the sudden popular attachment to sustainability, Oslund says, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Here?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s the thing that is so interesting to me. Our profession has always been about sustainability, and not in the sort of in-vogue manner which lip service sometimes engenders. I appreciate green roofs and green walls, but in a way, those are a reaction to popular conception, rather like putting lipstick on a hog. In fact, sustainability is truly about having this greater collective understanding about the entire series of systems that affect earth and water, such as porous and impervious surfaces if they are done correctly. That is how this profession has evolved and on which it is based. This is an inherent responsibility we have. We have always had to be cognizant of sustainable strategies.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????I can?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t be arrogant because it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s not in the Norwegian genetic makeup. My core understanding and training is based on all the baseline principles of landscape architecture and sustainability. So I think it is not about learning something new, but about revisiting something that has been the crux of the profession all along.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Oslund concedes that this requirement is not made any easier by the crazy economy. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????What makes it easier, however, is that it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s an acceptable marketing strategy for people who are now embracing sustainability. It comes out of the core of the idea. We have always had it. It is interesting and in a way strangely ironic that now, all of a sudden, it becomes a very important thing. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s great for landscape architects, but I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d like to see work being done out there that isn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t hanging its hat just on sustainability, but is moving more towards projects that are driven by an idea about the place or a landscape or condition that just happens to be sustainable. If you start out with the intention of doing something sustainable that could, in some ways, limit your creativity to produce something interesting.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????For example rain gardens could be done really well, or very poorly. I?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve seen them done poorly?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????they are done as reactions. Landscape architects need to be very careful about that. People need to think. And that?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s the whole point, isn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t it? Art provokes thought. You can like it or not, but if it gets you thinking than its done its job.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Even though it has been suggested that, vis a vis saving the planet, landscape architects are now at the point of the arrow rather than riding the tail feathers, I never thought about being on the point of the arrow. Of course, we have taken our fair share of shots about what we do. But we do it while maintaining a very steady path and letting the work shape us as opposed to us shaping the work. People ask when I lecture, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????How do you get your clients to agree??EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'???? Well, they get inspired to be part of the thought process and that is what ideas are all about. It?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s true?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+?we?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????ve had some very fortunate projects because we get clients who want to be inspired, too?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????????which is what makes it fun. Instead of swimming upstream, we get to ride the wave.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
