NEW YORK - The massive cleanup of "Ground Zero," site of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, is expected to be completed by June of 2002, according to the New York Times. The first new building could be under construction by the end of the year, and the PATH commuter line from New Jersey is expected to be in service once again by the end of 2003.

The cleanup was expected by many to last much longer, but the fast rate of progress is now raising questions as to exactly what comes next for this area of downtown Big Apple. Soon public hearings will begin to discuss the best possible use of the site, and a temporary memorial park is scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

By the end of 2001, almost a million tons of debris and steel had been carried from the site. Stave Gov. Pataki called the pace of the cleanup "inspirational," but called for the public to remain patient so as to not rush into the redevelopment.
