On April 13, 2010, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Green Landscaping Ordinance.
The ordinance, proposed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, will affect new development and properties undergoing significant alterations.
The ordinance mandates that 50 percent of new front yards be devoted to plantings or porous hardscaping to capture more rain water and keep down the volume of water draining into the sewer system.
The ordinance also requires parking lots, gas stations, car washes and other places with heavy vehicular traffic to have more trees. Trees and ornamental fencing will be used to screen such larger lots.
The mayor originally wanted the ordinance to apply to existing property owners, but backed off that plan, given the economic climate.
The new landscape ordinance is supplementing efforts over the last couple of years in the city to build more pocket parks and landscape medians.
Mayor Newsom even has a ?EUR??,,????'?????<?greening director,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Astrid Haryati, who has masters in landscape architecture and a BA in architecture. She has worked in the private sector and was the assistant for green initiatives for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.
