Greensburg, Kansas residents witnessed the ground breaking on a $43 million school to be built to the U.S. Green Building Council?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s highest level of certification: LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum.
In the wake of a May 4, 2007, tornado that destroyed 95 percent of homes and businesses in the western Kansas town of 1,400, officials with the city and Greensburg Unified School District 422 pledged to rebuild all public buildings in the city to the LEED Platinum standard. BNIM Architects, a Kansas City, Mo.-based company, designed the K-12 school.
Sustainable features that will earn the 120,000-square-foot school LEED Platinum certification include wind-power generation, geothermal heat, extensive daylighting, water consumption control, rainwater reuse, reclaimed materials, water efficient landscaping, flood zone and prairie restoration, and a green roof.
The new facility will be built in stages, starting with the school and sports facilities, followed by parking areas, the Industrial Arts building and later a bus barn. The school is projected to be completed in the summer of 2010.
