Course Description:

Cities across North America are embracing green roofs as Green Infrastructure stormwater management tools. However, all green roofs are not created equal when it comes to performance. This presentation will discuss the variables that influence green roof stormwater retention and provide an in-depth look at the research on this topic completed by the Green Roof Research Laboratory at Portland State University. The presentation will also provide an overview and analysis of some prominent green roof policies (Washington D.C., States of Virginia and Maryland, Toronto, etc) that have been adopted in recent years with varying outcomes. The lecture will also touch on general green roof environmental benefits, construction methodologies and maintenance practices.

Learning Objectives:

• Understand variables that influence green roof stormwater retention performance
• Understand how green roof performance is measured and quantified
• Apply results to green roof policy in major metropolitan areas
