Building owners in New York City who install green rooftops can now receive a significant tax credit.
New York Assembly bill 11226 (same as S.7553) sponsored by N.Y. Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr., passed the state legislature on June 24, 2008 and was signed by New York State Governor Paterson on August 8, 2008.
Green roofs installed on at least 50 percent of available rooftop space in New York City can now qualify for a one-year property tax credit of up to $100,000 ($4.50 per square-foot of roof area planted with vegetation).
This pilot program is New York state?EUR??,,????'???s first tax abatement program for installing and maintaining a green roof.
This tax incentive is aligned with New York City`s long-term sustainability plan, PlaNYC, begun in April 2007. PlaNYC promotes the use of Best Management Practices to control and capture stormwater using distributed and natural infrastructure solutions.
