The city of Santa Monica, Calif. is offering grants to individuals, property owners, businesses, nongovernmental organizations and public agencies to finance water-saving landscape projects. The reimbursement grants will cover 50 percent of the cost of a project (up to $20,000) and be dispersed upon completion.
Eligible projects described on the application include:
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Converting existing turf and other water-thirsty plants, and traditional, high-volume sprinkler irrigation systems to California-friendly plants and water-efficient irrigation systems can save up to 80 percent of water and 60 percent of maintenance costs.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The grant can be used for many landscaping-related tasks, including design and construction costs, plant materials, irrigation and erosion control.
In addition to water-efficient irrigation systems, all grant requests must include one or more of these additional features: California native plants or non-native water-efficient plants, rain catchment or stormwater management systems, graywater systems, or other innovative water-saving features in the landscape.
Currently, almost half of a typical Santa Monica home?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s water usage comes from landscaping. The grant is part of Santa Monica?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s goal to reduce its water usage 20 percent by 2010.
