The new design can be summarized in a series of strategic "moves": Red, Green and Blue. The Red move is a major central public space (Olympic Plaza) which unites the buildings and creates a large space appropriate to the scale of events and architecture. The Green move is the creation of a landscape respite within the urban core; tree-lined green fingers are introduced to connect the plaza to the surrounding park lands. The Blue move is the use of water to activate a gathering space at the high point of the plaza, and create a connection to the wetland landscape at the low end of the plaza-- the Northern Water Feature.
The design intent of this fountain is to create a landmark for the lower edge of the tilted plane of the Olympic Plaza. The fountain is composed of 3 rows of 15 jets. Each jet is shot from 2-meter stainless steel nozzles to create an 8-meter high arch of water. The result is three grand arching veils of water that step down and outward to the wetland and landscape beyond. The fountain appears to throw water from the plaza terminus directly onto the wetland ponds, connecting the two separate elements into one landscape system. The stone and lawn terraces that step down from the plaza to the water's edge, and the pier which extends outward from the plaza to overlook the wetlands, allow for interaction and interpretation of the fountain and wetlands.
As part of the site water cycle system, the Northern Water Feature wetland will receive storm water from an area of approximately 250 acres. The concept for the water feature wetland is to treat the storm water in wetland ponds in order to improve the quality so it can be circulated through the fountain as part of the cycle. The demonstration of the water cycle through the fountain is an important part of forging a connection between the technical and natural forces of this site. lasn
