Government Creates Four New National Monuments

Arizona, Colorado, and Washington involved

WASHINGTON DC

Arizona, Colorado, and Washington share 440,000 acres of land that were recently proclaimed national monuments.

President Clinton recently signed proclamations creating four new national monuments to protect 440,000 acres of sensitive federal lands in Arizona, Colorado, Oregon and Washington. The action, based on a recommendation from Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt, was the latest in a series of moves that angered some Western lawmakers but brought praise from environmental groups.

Vice President Al Gore made the announcement and called the lands among America's great natural treasures. Gore said "We act today so that years from now Americans will still be able to paddle free-flowing waters and hike pristine peaks, enjoying these extraordinary stretches of our natural heritage.''
