The newly discovered Whiskeytown Falls are expected to draw people to the park's popular lake, and into the woods despite some people who would prefer that the site remain a secret.


A 400-foot waterfall has been discovered in a remote corner of the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area?EUR??,,????'??+43,000 acres of wilderness near Redding, California. This roaring sheet of water tumbles down three tiers into Crystal Creek and has managed to remain hidden from park officials for almost 40 years. Led to the discovery by global imaging system maps, Russ Weatherbee was able to figure out exactly where the falls were to be found. He?EUR??,,????'???d stumbled on a map a couple of years ago while cleaning out an old cabinet, but the map happened to be wrong. Since the discovery, a handful of visitors have made the trek through thick brush and manzanita along a an eroding logging trail. A newly constructed trail that is expected to be finished by summer of 2006.
