Getty Gets Green Award for Facility

Landscaping at the Getty Center museum and research center in Los Angeles includes recirculating aquascapes and the use of drought-tolerant and native plant species.

The Getty Center has become the first facility in the country to receive a LEED-EB certification for the facility's conservation-minded use of energy, water and recycling.

LEED-EB stands for Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (for) Existing Buildings and is a program administered by the U.S. Green Building Council to promote green-conscious design, including reduced building-operation costs, improved indoor air quality and to reduce the overall impact of buildings on the environment. The award looks at exterior landscapes in addition to interior space, including efficient irrigation and the use of native plants, Getty spokeswoman Maureen McGlynn told landscapearchitect.com

The LEED-ED award was presented to Getty staff on Feb. 14 at a special Best Practices Forum organized by the International Facility Managers Association.

LEED certification for buildings not only recognizes good design but also spreads the news that good design leads to lower power and water bills, said Bradley Wells, vice president of finance and administration for the Getty Center.
